Ball Aerospace praise IRIS Software in their journey to risk maturity
Ball Aerospace Technologies Corp (BATC) has credited the IRIS Intelligence software with advancing the risk maturity of their projects and programs in official papers presented across North America.
Dr Stein Cass, author of the official papers, is currently Ball’s Deputy Program Manager on the James Webb Space Telescope (due to supersede Hubble in 2013) and was tasked with leading a 13 month program to identify and assess the leading risk management systems available. IRIS Intelligence selected and has subsequently been rolled out as an enterprise wide solution for BATC.
In the paper, “The Journey to Risk Maturity at Ball Aerospace”, IRIS Intelligence is praised as an “easily understandable and flexible database for tracking program and enterprise risks” and credited with helping to provide BATC employees with “an elevated awareness of risk management”.
The paper sets out an overview of Ball’s procurement process where all of the risk management tools available on the market were narrowed down to a shortlist of four vendors that were invited to pilot their software on Ball programs. The four vendors were assessed against a variety of criteria, including ease of use, flexibility, quality of analysis, reporting capabilities and cost. IRIS achieved 1st place overall against these combined criteria and was subsequently implemented by BATC during 2007.
BATC also praised the post implementation service of IRIS, stating that “Ball and IRIS have built an excellent collaborative relationship”. Customer feedback is highly valued by IRIS and feeds directly into the upgrade and development schedule.
As the tool is responsive to customer needs, the software is extremely user friendly and has exceeded customer expectations for user acceptance. Dr Cass writes “the risk management software user base is growing much faster than originally expected, due to the intuitive nature of the software.”
The software implementation has helped BATC along its path to risk maturity which in turn has led to major benefits. Dr Cass’s paper concludes “BATC now has a systematic, tailorable and repeatable approach to flexibly manage risks for projects, meeting the needs of the diverse program types throughout the company…Having a mature, proven method to ensure low-risk programs aids executive management in meeting program objectives and delivering products on time and on budget.”
Dr Cass has been asked to present this paper at numerous conferences across North America including the Project Management Institute (PMI) Global Congress, the National Space Symposium, and the Society for Risk Analysis.
